Depictions of the past have in many ways served to keep women in a subservient role to men, a subservience which has indeed been a very real part of womanhood in China. Fortunately Chinese cinema is slowly moving away from the demeaning depictions of women and toward depictions which have to potential to illuminate the real value of Chinese women to Chinese, and indeed the world, society.
