Learning of Self
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) When we first begin to make the effort of learning, or deciding who we are, or who we want to be, we usually have to take into account how others perceive us. Naturally the first who do that are our parents. We have that problem presented in the readings that we have been given: Amy Tann's "Two Kinds," and Danzy Senna's "The Mulatto Millennium." These two works will be used as a basis for the "learning of self."

Legitimacy of China’s Legal System and the Strength of the Chinese Communist Party
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses the facts that as China modernizes and becomes a more accepted partner in global enterprises and market opportunities, the Western world is more carefully evaluating the society that has evolved in modern China. The debates surrounding issues as varied as trade normalization, human rights violations, and whether or not China has any hope of hosting the Olympics, those in the debate repeatedly ask whether or not China has really changed (or is changing). Seeing how the Chinese government reacts to its own citizens who criticize it suggests that beneath the facade of international business, the totalitarian behemoth still lurks. In addition, the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) remains firmly in control of virtually all social, judicial, and political occurrences in the nation. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Leo Ou-Fan Lee/Shanghai Modern
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page book review that profiles this text. In the preface to his book Shanghai Modern, author Leo Ou-Fan Lee summarizes his text concisely in one sentence: "This is a book about the city of Shanghai in the 1930s as a cultural matrix of Chinese modernity" (Lee xi). Unlike many Western scholars who have written about Shanghai, Lee offers an "insider's point of view" by looking primarily at Chinese material, that is, "literary journals, newspapers as well as works by individual authors and scholars" in order to construct a "picture of Shanghai's urban culture at the height of its splendor" (Lee xi). Examination of this text shows that Lee succeeded admirably in his goal, as the reader acquires from Lee a nuanced, multi-level perspective on Shanghai culture during this period. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Literature of Marriage in China
[ send me this paper ]
An 11 page paper examining 10 anthropologically-centered journal articles discussing studies and observations on Chinese marriage patterns. China existed as a closed society long before the advent of communism in 1949, both practically and philosophically. The traditional Chinese view is that their way is superior to all others, particularly in their family relationships. The economic changes resulting from greater opening of the country in the past generation have lead to changes in marriage patterns that have been dictated by tradition for thousands of years, as these 10 articles demonstrate. Ma Yuan/Artist of the Song Dynasty
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page research paper/essay that analyzes a work by Ma Yuan of the Chinese Song Dynasty period. The art of Ma Yuan (c. 1155-1225), along with that of Xia Gui, represents the highest level of Chinese painting during the Song dynasty (1127-1279) (Ma Yuan). During the Southern Song period (1127-1279), court painters continued to favor landscapes as subject material, as they had in the past, but they also favored smaller formats and more lyrical treatments (Southern Song). This examination of a work, Walking on a Mountain path in Spring by Ma Yuan, concentrates on describing its lyric elements, that is, the features of the poem that are designed to evoke emotion on the part of the viewer. Also, a comparison is made between Ma Yuan and Xia Gui. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

A 6 page research proposal written for inclusion in application to a PhD program. Will China need to become increasingly “western” in its approach to financial markets, or will it be able to establish and follow its own course? Which approach would be of greatest benefit to the Chinese people? Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Mao Zedong's Cultural Vision Of China
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. Maoist cultural vision of China was wholly one-sided with regard to gender. When he spoke of revolution, he spoke to men; when he spoke of power of the people, he did not mean women; when he spoke of education, he was not addressing females. Clearly, Mao sought to create a Chinese culture based upon patriarchy, misogyny and autocracy. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

[ send me this paper ]
This 19 page report discusses QUALCOMM of San Diego, California, that owns the patents that are essential to virtually all aspects of the CDMA wireless telecommunications standards that have been adopted or proposed for adoption by standards-setting bodies throughout the world. Since China does not make CDMA technology, U.S. communications and equipment suppliers such as QUALCOMM are likely to see their sales soar in China since it is widely agreed-upon that China is the world’s fastest-growing mobile telephone market. This paper discusses a number of aspects associated with marketing CDMA in China. Bibliography lists 11 sources.
