This 10 page paper discusses the history of the Dominican Republic and its struggles with its neighbor Haiti, and how these incursions led the Dominican dictator Trujillo to invite first Spanish, and then Japanese, immigrants to settle on the island. It also discusses the fact that the conditions that the newcomers found were substantially different from those they had been promised, and that both the Japanese government and that of the Dominican Republic failed to given the newcomers the support they needed. Finally, it discusses the fact that most of the Japanese were repatriated or encouraged to settle in other Latin American countries; this included those that were born on the island. Pearl Harbor created fear in the hearts of all North Americans; in order to quell that fear and maintain control over its political, social and economic concerns, Canada worked hard to harshly dissuade any hybrid Japanese residents from becoming spies. These tactics, considered to be over-reactive at best and downright inhumane at worst, included the complete and utter downgrade of a once-participatory and mainstreamed population by forcing Japanese Canadians to forfeit their property, and, after being deprive of liberty, the men "were impressed into forced labor and the women and children transported to ghost towns and abandoned mining camps in the interior of the country to fend for themselves" (Milton 8). The disturbing sting of this sudden intolerance for an individual's hybrid identity has lasted long after the initial reason for its original existence, rendering Canada yet another in a long list of countries where the melting pot of multiculturalism has become an unwelcome entity, an element of modernity painfully portrayed in Wayson Choy's "Jade Peony" and Joy Kogawa's "Obasan."
